Celebrating Female Educators Everywhere!

Today is International Women's Day, a day to celebrate all women and their outstanding economic, political, and social achievements. The theme for this year is gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow. Today is such an important day to acknowledge, especially in schools. It's important to empower young girls, teach them to believe in themselves, and celebrate other women along the way. I know I am proud to be a woman and every girl should be taught to be proud of that as well!

“Little girls with dreams become women with vision." –Unknown.

What better day to highlight a few of the many influential woman educators? Below are some of the inspiring women who have proved they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to despite what society told them.

Helen Keller

Hellen Keller lost her sight and hearing at 19 months old due to an illness. After learning how to read, write, speak, and understand spoken language, she became the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor's degree. She continued to defy the odds as she became a renowned author, disability rights advocate, political activist, and educator.

Patsy Mink

Patsy Mink was denied from medical school because she was a woman and couldn’t get a job because she was a mother. She persevered and became a politician who advocated for Title IX. Her efforts transformed the educational opportunities available to millions of women. Thanks to her advocacy, 11.5 million women now attend college and 3.5 million participate in sports.

Ella Flagg Young

In 1909, Ella Young became the first female superintendent of a major U.S city. She fought for teachers to have their voices heard, child-driven learning, and individual student growth. She earned a Ph.D. and became the first female president of the National Education Association. The impact of Young’s 50 years in education can still be felt today.
