How To Keep Students Engaged Over Summer Break

Ok, so that might be easier said than done, but we at least have to try, right? Keeping students engaged while out of school for the summer has been a battle waging for quite some time. Sure, there are Summer reading assignments, among a few other traditional ways, but those can only go so far.

For this blog, it's time to think outside the box. Let's start by saying I realize some of these may not be tried and true. So, if any readers would like to submit any other ideas, we will gladly accept them! Not only that, we may just go a step further and make this a recurring series as we receive new submissions from some awesome educators. But, for the time being, below you will find some solutions to keeping students engaged over the summer. From the best an internet Google search has to offer!

  1. Host a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to a cause of your choice.
  2. Instead of having a garage sale, host a book drive for those who can’t afford books. Students can make posters or signs to spread awareness about the event.
  3. Plant a tree to positively impact the environment. If planting a fruit tree, share the fresh fruit with a local food bank.
  4. Read for Pennies! Ask friends and family to donate money to a cause of your choice in exchange for a certain number of minutes reading.
  5. Host a bake sale and donate the proceeds. Students can even try creating their own recipes!
  6. Create games to play with the family or friends. Try making a math game, a language arts game, or have them create their own game!

So there you have it. A few fun and creative ways to keep your students engaged while they are away from the classroom. Again, feel free to email us any ideas that have worked, haven't worked, or that you think could be useful! I would love to add them to the list. Also, head over to our website to view how our products can keep educators in touch with not just students, but parents and other teachers as well. Even during the break!
